“My lifestyle led to high blood pressure, high cholesterol, constant overthinking which destroyed mind and body” - Rajiv Anthwal, Ambassador of Health and Director at Core Mentors Association

My Biggest Fears While Growing Up:

Like most children, my biggest fear while growing up was securing good marks. I spent my childhood being happy and playful, except when the fear of studies and scoring marks lurked in my mind. As a result, I viewed studying as a mode of scoring good marks instead of a medium of gaining knowledge. My fear of books and marks kept me away from identifying my real purpose in life. But it further escalated when I joined a company after completing my studies. Three months into my job and the same fear crept in, the only exception being money and appraisals instead of marks. I initially thought that my job would allow me to focus on my skills and individual growth but heightened my childhood angst.

How I Overcame My Fears:

To overcome my fears, I went back to my childhood to overcome my fears and recollect things that made me happy. I realised that playing games were the answer to it. Soon, I began playing sports like badminton in my daily life.

The next thing I did was teaming up with my best friend to do social work. We helped a drug addict by sponsoring all his medicines as part of his recovery. Soon, I instilled social work elements for the first half of my day when I am in my office. My team and I decided that we shall celebrate our birthdays and other events by getting together with the children of a primary school from Chakkarpur village in Gurgaon. We would eat together, present them with gifts and do social work with them, sometimes accompanied by my children.

Positive Impact Of bringing Back My Childhood Favourites:

Inculcating sports activities and social work into my life helped me get back my happiness.

I also gained a different perspective on life after I encountered a young girl with cancer. Her father couldn't pay for her medical treatments because he was unemployed. This made me feel grateful for having a job and made me realise that I was probably overthinking. It made me realise that my life wasn't as bad as I thought of it. With this thought, I could go back to my job with a lot more enthusiasm than I did before.

Incidents That Severely Impacted My Physical And Mental Well being:

Due to my sedentary lifestyle, I lost out on sleep, began overthinking, and engaging in unhealthy corporate parties. It eventually led to increased blood pressure, high cholesterol level, and fatty liver. On top of this, my mother developed breast cancer. Being the eldest son, I took up the responsibility of getting my mother the best treatment. Since I was not doing well physically and emotionally, I felt the baggage on my shoulder. I was admitted to the hospital for a week. Several tests were conducted, such as the test for intestinal cancer, but, thankfully, I escaped the disease with an acute intestinal infection. However, this made me realise that I had to prioritise my well-being to become an inspiration for those around me.

My Motto In Life:

I decided to become an ambassador of health, someone who inspired others to take care of themselves. Soon, the word spread among my neighbourhood, office colleagues, family members, and life started to fall back in place on its own. Since then, every aspect of my life has improved because I chose to come out of an unhealthy lifestyle. Whenever somebody comes to me with their worries, I always tell them that life problems are a blessing in disguise.

Mental Well-being Of Working Professionals:

One must always work to find a balance between physical fitness and mental well-being. Those who solely work out to build muscles often ignore the importance of mindfulness and empathy. At the same time, mental health professionals fail to realise that most of their mental well-being is achieved through physical acts. I always advise people to strike a balance in their well-being. Physical health helps release hormones in your body, such as endorphins and dopamine. On the other hand, mental fitness allows our hormones to come to a balanced level. It's also scientifically proven that mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, ADHD, common in the corporate world, are primarily cured by physical activities.

Workplace Practices To Enhance Mental Well-being:

Companies must focus more on teamwork and collaborations than individual performance. Companies should also keep rewards for employees and teams for their outside office work, such as social work, individual transformation, and environmental work. It encourages employees to look into the other aspects of their life’s well-being and increase their productivity. Employers are to look into their employees' holistic growth rather than using them as entities for their profits.

Some practices could be - One can pot plants in their workplace, with each plant receiving their employees' name. Employees can nurture their plants and study them as if they are nurturing themselves. Acts like these will help to bring mindfulness to the professional front as well.

Companies must also inculcate physical activities in their workplace, such as 5 minutes of workout, yoga, and meditation. It hardly takes a couple of minutes.

My Well-being Practices:

I practice mindfulness every day of my life, which has helped me achieve better mental health. Mindfulness refers to the act of deep inhalation and exhalation, which keeps our mind from wandering around. Initially, one might have to perform it deliberately, but eventually, with more practice, one gets used to it.

My Definition Of A Healthy Mind:

Making self-care the central aspect of your life; engaging with your close ones such as family, friends, and colleagues; engaging with nature and with locals around; engaging with one's city, country and looking at the bigger purpose of life than just being self-absorbed.
