In an exclusive interaction with SCIKEY, Cory speaks about his startup ShedWool, also shares his thoughts on his biggest learning from the year 2020 & much more.
1. Please share with us what you do? (About your startup, ShedWool)
Shedwool is solving restaurant labor problems with advanced scheduling and compliance apps (mobile and web). We are building a full suite restaurant profitability platform touching hiring, ordering, guest feedback, and more.
2. What motivated you to start this business?
The volatility of changing scheduling in the restaurant industry – never knowing when you’ll work or how much you’ll make. Childcare, financial forecasting, and planning a life outside of restaurant work are all next to impossible in the hospitality industry, and I set out to change that to enrich the lives of the millions of shift workers in the restaurant industry and beyond.
3. How did you get funded?
I self-funded the early days, bootstrapping and bartering in-kind for help building an early product and getting to market. We subsequently have raised several modest funding rounds, and reinvested revenues into our growth.
4. What is your most successful marketing approach?
LinkedIn – all day every day! Organic, unpaid and targeted!!
5. How has a failure, or apparent failure, set you up for later success?
All the failures compound and add up to our successes! I’m glad we had to bootstrap and run lean - it helped us learn and grow together.
6. What is your biggest learning from the year 2020 and how has it transformed the way you look at the world now?
That we as a society are resilient and adaptive. In a phrase: WE CAN ACCOMPLISH ANYTHING WHEN WE WORK TOGETHER.
7. In the last two years, what new belief, behaviour, or habit has most improved your life?
Adopting cryptocurrency and learning all about the underpinning technology, blockchain.
8. What’s one productivity hack you can’t live without?
Mediation and breathe control.
9. What is of importance in this pandemic, both for leaders and organizations?
Empathy, love, and active listening. Moreso than anything: FAITH and HOPE.
