"A healthy mind is when one is at peace and contented with what he/she must face." - Nonie Harun, Lecturer, Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS

What were your biggest fears in your growing years?

While growing up, what I feared most, were not having friends, I was also always worried and scared if people hate me and worse, talking bad about my size and my looks.

How did you overcome those fears?

It took me years to come to terms with the fact that I cannot control what people feel and think about me. I learned to ignore and let go. I tell myself not to do the same to others.

What were your workplace anxieties when you started your professional career? How did it overall impact your performance?

I am anxious about not being able to meet the expectations of my superiors and I always feel that I am not good although I performed my work well.

How did you overcome those anxieties?

I befriend people who have a positive attitude and energy, I continue to perform my work accordingly and I let go of expectations to gain appraisal for whatever I do.

What do you wish professionals knew about mental health?

I wish that professionals acknowledge that mental health is a critical part of a person’s life. Mental health co-exists with physical health and people cannot substitute one over another.

What are the workplace practices that can worsen or enhance the mental health of employees?

A workplace that can worsen the mental health of employees is when superiors consider everyone has the same level of strength, intelligence and expect them to do the same in every aspect.

A workplace that enhances the mental health of employees is when superiors and peers care, understand, respect, and empathize with one another.

What are the major causes and aggravators of mental health problems associated with work?

There are various causes or aggravators of mental health problems that are associated with work. Some that I have encountered:

1. High expectations of KPI
2. Unfair treatment by superior / peer
3. Lack of communication
4. Unhealthy competition among peers
5. Unorganized/unplanned work
6. Lack of social support
7. Too focused on work and discard wellbeing

Describe a “healthy mind” in your own words

A healthy mind is when one is at peace and contented with what he/she must face. That is being able to let go of what he/she cannot control and focus only on what he/she can.
