“It wasn’t a conscious decision for me to fall out and build a business. I did realise early that I love meeting people and like to proactively lead things; Am willing to work hard to defy the odds that come my way. Always up for it.” - Khushboo Nangalia Founder of BEYOND99 and Salt & Pepper

Get to know me while growing up

Born to a hard-working parent back in a small town in Kolkata, India my very early days of growing up wasn’t much different than a usual girl. My mom, very reserved and introverted as she was but very loving and caring. My father was a businessman and while growing up I’ve always admired him as a businessman. Though I never thought I’d work my way building businesses in the future - in fact, dreamt to be an astronaut inspired by Late Kalpana Chawla. My line of education was all sorted and aligned until life took 360 degree.

How I got started

My career started very early (which I see as a blessing in disguise now). At the age of 16, I lost my father, and a lot of follow-up family issues made me strong. Being the elder child I’d the sense of responsibility already sinked in and while in school I managed my dad’s business and picked up a part-time work-from-home opportunity. It wasn’t the crunch of the money or to support the family that got me started but I really had the quest of learning more and make it on my own – that’s how it started!

Since then there is no looking back. The journey has been tough and pleasurable, both. But could definitely say the hard work that we put in never goes unpaid. I’ve started out from data entry to sales and then absolutely switched into the web industry – developing myself into a proficient frontend developer in the initial couple of years of my start and paving my way ahead in strategy and communications.

I worked hard, learned quickly, and got early precedence. But it was never easy. And I missed out on a lot of things that most people my age (18 then) were doing at the time. Parties, sporting events, the usual stuff for high school and college kids. However, I matured quickly. And above any other skills, I learnt life!

Along the way was honoured to work with some top-notch brands along the way build relationships that counts.

2 Major things happened in my life in the year 2014 – I got married to the love of my life. I met my husband at the age of 16 in the same year when I lost my father. He was the strength when I was recovering from the colossal incident and support in every situation. And I moved my business base to Malaysia.

My entrepreneurial journey started at FOURDY with him back in 2008 yet when I was in high school and as I finished schooling I could join hands with him (my best friend then, better half now) and pursue my passion.

What inspires me!

If I talk about the inspiration in my life, my mom is one of the biggest strengths in my life after my husband. She transformed into a strong and courageous woman after my dad passed away. Her transformation inspired me a lot. Today, whenever I see my mother, it fills me with confidence and strength. I’m blessed to have her and my better half along with me :)

At work; and my take on balancing

Like the saying goes ‘An entrepreneur is someone who jumps off a cliff and builds a plane on the way down so it applies to me in a way. It wasn’t a conscious decision for me to fall out and build a business. I did realise early that I love meeting people and like to proactively lead things; Am willing to work hard to defy the odds that come my way. Always up for it.

Being a working woman, I never try to create a balance in my life, believing there’s nothing such as balance but an integration between both. Love to go with the flow and make things happen!

What’s my Superpower!

Down the years I’ve been working my way to run initiatives that can empower community of future leaders for speaking on public forum, podcast, hosting talk shows, and mentoring. Then, when it comes to superpowers I’d like to swing my wand and empower each single women to be able to stand strong, put them first, voice out what they want and desire and life…and above all empower them to go for it.

There’s nothing better than DO than REGRET!

Peak into one of my happiest moment

I’ve been blessed to be surrounded by wonderful people who recognises my work and efforts. There are a lot of occasions that can be held close to heart.

Then being awarded as Top Women Entrepreneur to 100 most influential marketing leaders in Asia didn’t brought me as much joy as a small kid did in one of my events. As soon I stepped off the stage after my TEDx talk - a father with her daughter in his arm approached me and shared “She enjoyed listening you and says it’s the best talk she’s ever heard”. That was my aha moment: if a 5 year old can relate to and enjoy what I delivered, there’s nothing better I could ask.

Closing Thought!

Today, I’m living on the edge, going after my dreams and waking up to jump out of bed to create what I’m passionate about. And I’m glad to have a tribe, team, and partners around who make my digital agency and growth academy happen as a part of my life vision.
